Lufthansa CityLine GmbH is a German regional airline based in Munich. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa and member of the Lufthansa Regional network. It is the largest regional airline in Europe with hubs at Frankfurt Airport and Munich Airport. The airline was founded as Ostfriesische Lufttaxi (OLT) in 1958 and became Ostfriesische Lufttransport (OLT) in 1970 (which existed until 2013 as a separate airline) in Emden. It was reorganised and renamed as DLT Luftverkehrsgesellschaft mbH on 1 October 1974 and began cooperation with Lufthansa in 1978 with short-range international routes. By 1988 all operations were on behalf of Lufthansa. In March 1992 DLT became a wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa and was renamed Lufthansa CityLine. Lufthansa CityLine employs 2,332 people, of whom 664 are cockpit crew, 849 cabin crew and 819 work in the technical and administrative areas (as of December 31, 2011). Lufthansa placed an order on 17 April 2007 for 30 Embraer E-190/195 and 15 Bombardier CRJ-900 aircraft to directly replace LH CityLine's fleet of BAe 146 and Avro RJ aircraft. The last Avro RJ 85 took off from Zurich Airport at 17:00 on October 29 2012 and was scrapped on February 15 2013. In May 2013 it has been announced that the management and administration offices of CityLine will be relocated from Cologne to Munich. As of September 2014 the move has been completed. The E-190/195 models are a larger stretch of the E-170/175 models fitted with a new, larger wing, larger horizontal stabilizer and a new engine, the GE CF34-10E, rated at 18,500 lb (82.30 kN). These aircraft compete with the Bombardier CRJ-1000 and CS100, the Boeing 717-200 and 737-600, and the Airbus A318. The first flight of the E-190 was on March 12, 2004 (PP-XMA), with the first flight of the E-195 (PP-XMJ) on December 7 of the same year. The launch customer of the E-190 was New York-based low-cost carrier JetBlue with 100 orders and 100 options. British low-cost carrier Flybe launched the E-195 with 14 orders and 12 options. As the 190/195 models are of mainline aircraft size, many airlines operate them as such, fitting them with a business class section and operating them themselves, instead of having them flown by a regional airline partner. For example, Air Canada operates 45 E-190 aircraft fitted with 9 business-class and 88 economy-class seats as part of its primary fleet. JetBlue and US Airways also operate the E-190 as part of their own fleet thus allowing airlines increased crewing flexibility by having the ability of air crews to work aboard narrow-body or widebody aircraft all the same.

The Monument to the Battle of the Nations (German: Völkerschlachtdenkmal) is a monument in Leipzig, Germany to the 1813 Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of the Nations. Paid for mostly by donations and by the city of Leipzig, it was completed in 1913 for the 100th anniversary of the battle, at a cost of 6,000,000 Goldmark. The monument commemorates Napoleon's defeat at Leipzig, a crucial step towards the end of hostilities in the War of the Sixth Coalition, which was seen[by whom?] as a victory for the German people, although Germany as we know it did not exist at that time. There were German-speakers fighting on both sides, as Napoleon's troops also included conscripted Germans from the French-occupied left bank of the Rhine as well as from the Confederation of the Rhine. The structure is 91 metres tall. It contains over 500 steps to a viewing platform at the top, from which there are spectacular views across the city and environs. The structure makes extensive use of concrete, although the facings are of granite. The monument is widely regarded as one of the best examples of Wilhelmine architecture. It is said to stand on the spot of some of the bloodiest fighting, from where Napoleon ordered the retreat of his army. Between 16--19 October 1813, the Battle of the Nations was fought by the coalition armies of Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden against the French army of Napoleon aided by Polish and Italian troops as well as German-speakers from the Confederation of the Rhine. Napoleon's army was defeated and compelled to return to France while the Allies invaded France early the next year. Napoleon was forced to abdicate, and was exiled to Elba that spring. Construction In 1814 proposals to build a monument to commemorate the battle were made. Among the supporters of the project, author Ernst Moritz Arndt called for the construction of a "a large and magnificent (monument), like a colossus, a pyramid, or the cathedral of Cologne". Architect Friedrich Weinbrenner created a design for the monument that ultimately was not used.[2] In 1863, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the battle, a foundation stone was placed, but the memorial was not built.[3] Clemens Thieme, a member of the Verein für die Geschichte Leipzigs (Association for the History of Leipzig) learned during a meeting of the association about the past plans to build a monument. Interested in resuming the project, Thieme, who was also a member of the Apollo masonic lodge, proposed the project during a meeting and gained the support of his fellow masons.[4] In 1894, he founded the Deutsche Patriotenbund (Association of German Patriots) which raised, by means of donations and a lottery, the funds necessary to construct the monument for the 100th anniversary . The following year, the city of Leipzig donated a 40,000 acres (160 km2) site for the construction.[5] The project was commissioned to Bruno Schmitz, due to his previous works at the Kyffhäuser.[3] The construction began in 1898. The chosen construction site was the spot where Napoleon ordered the retreat of his army.[1] Thieme financed part of the construction as well, and for his complete dedication to the project, he was named an Honorary Citizen of Leipzig.[4] In 1898, the construction started. 82,000 cubic metres (2,900,000 cu ft) of land were moved; 26,500 granite blocks were used and the project resulted in a total cost of 6,000,000ℳ (54,759,977€ in 2013),[1] the monument was finished in 1913.[6] Design and concept Inspired by Weinbrenner's early project,[7] Schmitz constructed the monument over an artificial hill,[1] and selected a pyramidal shape for a clear view of the surroundings.[8] The base is 124 metres (407 ft) large and 124 metres (407 ft) wide. The main structure, at 91 metres (299 ft), is one of the tallest monuments in Europe. It is composed of two storys. On the first story, a crypt is adorned by eight large statues of fallen warriors, each one next to smaller statues called the Totenwächter (Guards of the Dead). On the second story, the Ruhmeshalle (Hall of Fame) features four statues, each 9.5 metres tall, representing the four legendary historic qualities ascribed to the German people: bravery, faith, sacrifice and fertility.[8] The statues of the monument were sculpted by Christian Behrens and his apprentice Franz Metzner,[1] who finished the remaining statues after Behrens's death in 1905.[9] Metzner worked on the sculptures at the top and inside the memorial. http://studiomde.nl/

Multiple agencies responding to an anti terror drill in Leipzig, Germany. The exercise was divided into 3 parts and performed in Leipzig's main station in the night from the 16th to the 17th May 2017. Read more below. The scenario: 3 terrorist on a suicide mission, equipped with assault rifles and explosives. The drill was cut into 3 parts. Repeating the attack 3 times. 300 or 500 federal cops took part at this exercise. There were around 100 - 200 "injured" civilians. Unfortunately there isn't a lot of public information about the drill. 13:40 and 14:40 - these 4 vehicles responded to an activated fire alarm at the main station! Even though it was clear that there was an exercise which included lots of smoke and even though there were already fire units on scene!! Poor guys. Think about the size of such an attack and the trained response here... that exercise was ridiculous. There's quite a lot of criticism about the drill. It's difficult to rate the police part of it since the actual training area was covered by fences and there's not much information/ footage of it. But one thing which was most likely not realistically trained are the responses of police units. Police won't instantly have 50 officers right on the scene when it happens. The drill was between 11pm on 5/16 and 4am on 5/17 - a time with only a very limited amount of emergency resources. They only used around 25% of the top floor and 2 tracks of the main station. Even though, there are 3 shopping floors, 4 entrance halls and a lot of gangways. They want to use the results of that drill for further training... but the training seemed nothing more but an advanced weapon/ shooting training for police officers. I would try to keep a terror attack drill as realistic as possible. Planning absolutely everything from A - Z. From the first shots/ explosions, the hundreds of emergency calls, the coordination and tracking of the callers and victims over the whole period of the incident, all the emergency responses of a lot of vehicles and their coordination on scene, the first overview, the possibility that attackers may be escaping among civilians, search and rescue of all injured, transports of all the patients and coordination with hospitals, etc. etc. Would sure take something to develop and create such an exercise but it would be much more useful than (several) very small and unrealistic drills. They could also install cameras everywhere and use the footage and all the results for further training, even making it available internationally so that emergency services can profit from these experiences and results. Look at the response and now imagine how an actual terror attack would look like in rush hour on a busy main station of a city with a population of 550,000. From the point of view of Fire/ EMS/ mass casualty response teams the drill was a total joke! You can see ALL the vehicles which responded to the terror attack drill with up to 200 casualties. Only 2 ambulances were transporting 1 patient each at one point! They did absolutely NOT train the rescue part of such an attack. All you can see are around 2 fire vehicles and 3 EMS vehicles rolling up to each of the 3 simulated attacks. I feel sorry for all the volunteer who woke up just to be called there. Those who prepared due to the public information which was released 2 days prior the drill, stating it will be one of the biggest in central Germany and "they will dispatch everything they have". Fire/ EMS/ mass casualty crews did not much on scene. They mostly stood around and did pretty much nothing. What else could they do in an unrealistic response and that amount of simulated casualties. The organizers did not properly warn people inside the main station. Not enough public announcements through the speaker system, especially none before the drill started with loud explosions. No signs posted that there's going to be such a drill. They kept up regular night train traffic all the time. Leipzig, Sachsen (Saxony), Germany, May 16 & 17 2017.
